Fresh Face: The Stone Independent School
Progressive education based in community partnerships. Learning by doing in an environment where every action, from stewardship of the building to organic gardening to coding with local tech companies, is curricular. These are not typically things you think of when you look at a high school curriculum. But these are the tenets of The Stone Independent School.
The Stone Independent School began when a group of educators, concerned with the way standardized tests were holding teaching hostage and hindering students’ critical thinking, reimagined what a school could be. They designed a new kind of school, one that’s as creative and vibrant as the City in which it resides, one that reflects the same values of the makers, builders, entrepreneurs, and community organizers who make Lancaster thrive.
The curriculum at Stone does not confine students to the walls of their classroom—or even their campus. With a four-year entrepreneurship program and a commitment to social justice, the students at Stone will see Lancaster City as their true classroom. And with Stone’s scaffolded global education program, they’ll see the world that way too.
Graduates of The Stone Independent School will be collaborators, creative thinkers, and problem solvers—the kind of lifelong learners who are difference makers on college campuses and in their communities.
And it all begins this Fall at the new progressive school in downtown Lancaster that believes everyone learns best by doing.
