A Night of Music and Meaning at PRIMA with Broadway Star Billy Porter
“The arts hold a mirror to our society and tells the truth about ourselves. Hopefully it illuminates a path that can enforce change.” – Billy Porter
Broadway star Billy Porter comes to Lancaster for special benefit concert for PRIMA Theatre featuring a solo performance and meet-and-greet event on Saturday, July 15 at 7pm. A special gourmet dinner on the concert stage with a preview performance will also be offered on July 14, at 6pm.
In a recent interview with Fig Lancaster, Porter spoke about the upcoming event, the arts, and staying true to yourself.
The Big Event
“The event is a combination of my previous albums as well as new music from my new album,” said Porter. “It’s a message of love, a message that heals, and a message that changes hearts and minds.”
Billy Porter is well known for originating the role of Lola in Kinky Boots on Broadway and won a 2013 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his performance. He also won a Grammy for the album from that show. But he has also been focused on creating a variety of musical experiences—he's bringing all of this and more to the event that you don’t want to miss!
His new album, Billy Porter Presents: The Soul of Richard Rodgers, will be featured at the event. Attendees will experience the beautiful compilation of jazz.
“This album is the best representation of my musical voice that I’ve ever had the opportunity to show,” said Porter. “Even if I do not sing everything, the DNA of who I am is all throughout it.”
As for his time in Kinky Boots Porter remembers it fondly.
“It was remarkable” said Porter. “It was life-changing, life-altering.”
Music with Meaning
Billy Porter emphasizes the need for music and theatre to help show that genuine expression is a beautiful thing.
“In dark places artists can be the light,” noted Porter. “It’s art—it what we do and it’s what we’ve always done.”
“We stand on the shoulders of the people that came before us that fought for where we are today with acceptance as a culture,” said Porter. “We aren’t going back.”
Living in authenticity and truth can change the world—and this is a message Porter wants to continue to spread.
“At every moment you grow,” said Porter. “You’re always learning if you’re doing it right.”
