Home of American Modernist Painter Charles Demuth
Be inspired by our museum’s location: the studio and former home of Charles Demuth (1883-1935), American modernist painter. The opportunity to explore the artwork of this nationally and internationally renowned artist in the very place that he created the vast majority of his artwork is unique.
Demuth derived his inspiration and subject matter from his mother’s garden, visible right outside the window of his studio. He also found inspiration in the local farmers markets, and in Lancaster City’s new industrial buildings – its smokestacks, water towers and grain silos – from which he created artworks that reflect his hometown, yet mark a turning point in American Art.
