Sitting on a couch in the final month of our peace internship in Alexandria, Egypt, we chewed over our next move. Our co-workers had spent the previous six months explaining what a perfect fit Lancaster would be for us. Prior to life in the Middle East, they’d lived in the city for a year and a half, so we wondered if they might unintentionally be embellishing Lancaster’s finer points simply because they were fantasizing about being back home. To those who live outside of or have never been to Lancaster, the idea of packing everything up and moving to “Amish Town” to further our careers as professional musicians seems peculiar…perhaps a step in the wrong direction.
But there is something deep and beautiful developing here in Lancaster—a family-arts renaissance of sorts. It’s something we had to visit and personally take part in to appreciate. Having only been back in America for two weeks, we made the long drive out from Cincinnati with the expectation of spending equal time in Lancaster and Philly, and then making our decision on which would be our home. Five days into Lancaster and the LAUNCH Music Conference, we knew there’d be no point in any place else. First Friday was so warming; we had a show that night on Prince St. and couldn’t believe how alive and together the city felt. We’d never seen so many folks out embracing the arts as a community. So many venues, so many great connections with local musicians who produce quality music, and a sense of pride people feel from having it all in their own backyard.
In the same way a fine creation brings glory to its creator, we feel that the quality of Lancaster’s fine arts is a direct result of how much the city nurtures and invests into them. A genuine music city needs to offer variety and options to its artists. Towns like Portland, Seattle, New York City, and Nashville are often hailed as “Music Meccas”, places where musicians dream of going and improving their craft. And while not nearly as large, Lancaster has the potential to be on that same plane. Being that our goal is to make a lifelong career out of music, we would have never moved here if we didn’t see it as a legit place to further ourselves.
When putting our band together, we specifically avoided the route of posting flyers; we waited for natural connections to form and now we have the privilege of playing with some of the city’s best musicians. The result is that we have a band that loves to be together; it feels like family. We’re set to start our album and we’re thrilled to have one of our very best friends recording it for us. That’s generally how our whole experience in Lancaster has been so far and perhaps that’s why we love this place so much—Lancaster has a lot to offer and the things that are blessing our music are inadvertently making us better people, not just better musicians.
We feel inspired; we feel loved. Our song “Dearest Lord” is basically just a list of all that stirs us and makes us feel good: the view of the Susquehanna River from Chickies Rock, driving alongside the pastures where hard-working men and women bask in simplicity, spending a morning at Central Market, meeting folks from all walks of life and actually having time to learn what makes them so special. We’ve never had as many meaningful and unique relationships as we’ve made here this past year.
We feel humbled. We feel lucky. We’re getting to share our music, our stories, and our lives with listeners. We’re getting to play a lot of shows and meet a lot of great people along the way. By no means are we where we one day hope to be (making some money would be nice! European tour!), but we honestly love our lives here and couldn’t imagine ourselves anywhere else right now. We are beggar folk. There’s nothing special about us; we just love people and love playing music.
