Hats off to Duke’s Julep!

Duke 5Complete with dress uniforms and derby-inspired hats, we gathered for the Duke’s Julep finale last Saturday at the Lancaster Marriott to celebrate our Lancaster City Mounted Patrol. After feeding our impressive guests of honor a few giant carrots in thanks, we were delighted to be able to present a check to the Lancaster City Police Foundation for $2,110 in support of Duke, our longest-serving equestrian ambassador and his hard-working colleagues.

Joint efforts by the Lancaster Marriott, Penn Square Grille, Woodford Reserve and Fig promoted and sold the original Duke’s Julep signature cocktail created exclusively by mixologist Chris Chamberlain to benefit the mounted patrol. Half of the proceeds from every cocktail served this spring have benefitted the foundation.

duke 3The cocktail has inspired other city entities to support the mounted patrol as well. Mark-Finberg Gallery benefits the foundation through sales of limited edition prints of ‘Lliam’ while Pencilworks Gallery will raffle an original painting of Police Chief Sadler riding Duke outside of Central Market. Raffle tickets are available at the gallery.

Duke, our city’s regal white mount, continues recovering from his emergency surgery early this year and is back on the streets.  He is strong, yet his surgery cost between $6,000 – $10,000. While the Lancaster City Police Mounted Patrol officers are paid by the city budget, the additional expenses including feed, equipment and veterinary care are funded though donations.   As the only full-time mounted patrol in the state of Pennsylvania, Lancaster’s Mounted Patrol is indeed something to support and celebrate.    Just one more distinctively wonderful thing about the City of Lancaster…

Thanks to everyone for your support!
